NDMA Issues Nationwide Heatwave Alert Until May 31

by Mahnoor Arif

According to the NDMA, temperatures are expected to remain significantly higher than normal in most parts of the country, particularly in Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Daytime temperatures may cross 40°C to 45°C in many cities, increasing the risk of heatstroke and dehydration.

The authority has urged citizens to take serious precautionary measures during the peak heat hours (11 am to 4 pm). People have been advised to:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water
  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities
  • Wear light-colored, loose clothing
  • Use umbrellas or stay in shaded areas when going outside

Special attention should be given to vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and people with heart or respiratory conditions. Farmers, laborers, and outdoor workers have also been asked to take extra care.

The NDMA has directed all provincial and district administrations to remain on high alert. Emergency medical facilities, heatstroke treatment centers, and public awareness campaigns should be activated immediately.

As Pakistan continues to face intense summer weather due to climate change, officials are stressing the importance of public cooperation to prevent any heat-related emergencies during this period.
