Chinese companies working on the Sindh Barrages Improvement Project have accused the project’s director of demanding bribes to approve a contract related to the Sukkur Barrage restoration.
The allegations were made by two firms, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and Hubai Shuizong Water Resources and Hydropower Construction Co. According to their complaint, the director demanded illegal payments, even though the contract had been awarded through a fair and transparent bidding process.
The accusations include a shocking claim that he requested a luxurious 3,600 sq. ft. apartment in the Burj Khalifa, UAE, to be purchased in his name as a bribe. The Chinese firms have expressed their frustration and warned that they might stop working on the project if the issue is not resolved promptly.
This controversy has raised concerns about corruption affecting key infrastructure projects and could potentially delay the restoration work on the Sukkur Barrage, which is vital for the region’s irrigation and water management. Authorities are expected to investigate the matter to ensure transparency and accountability.
