Pakistan Petroleum Limited Discovers Gas in Sindh’s Kotri North Block

by Hameed

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), in collaboration with its partners in the Kotri North Joint Venture, has successfully discovered natural gas from its exploratory well named Barki-1, located in the Jamshoro district of Sindh.

This discovery is being seen as another positive step for Pakistan’s growing energy sector and its efforts to explore and utilize domestic hydrocarbon resources. The joint venture includes United Energy Pakistan Limited as the operator with a 50% share, Pakistan Petroleum Limited holding 40%, and Asia Resources Oil Limited with a 10% stake.

The Barki-1 well was drilled to a depth of 3,392 meters, where the presence of hydrocarbons was confirmed in the Pab Formation — a promising gas-bearing geological layer. Initially, the well produced 1.5 million standard cubic feet of gas per day (MMSCFD), which later increased to 5.5 MMSCFD after stimulation work was carried out.

This achievement not only adds to Pakistan’s domestic gas production potential but also boosts confidence in further exploration opportunities across similar geological structures in the Sindh region.
