Punjab witnessed one of its biggest traffic crackdowns in a single day, resulting in over 12,000 vehicles being impounded and more than 50,000 challans issued across the province. The strict action came after Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz directed the police to fully enforce new traffic reforms and strengthen the modern traffic management system.
According to the police spokesperson, 3,195 people were arrested and 3,215 cases were registered for various violations within just 24 hours. A total of 12,814 vehicles, including motorcycles, rickshaws, and cars, were seized for repeat offenses or failure to follow basic road rules.
Police issued 50,480 challans worth over Rs6.3 crore during the crackdown. They also targeted environmental violations, fining 3,511 smoke-emitting vehicles and impounding 384 of them. Fitness certificates of three vehicles were also cancelled for failing to meet safety standards.
To encourage legal and responsible driving, authorities issued 42,561 driving licences in a single day. This effort aims to reduce unlicensed driving, which remains a major factor in road accidents across Punjab.
Over the past week, more than 257,000 challans have been issued, generating Rs203 million in fines, showing the scale of the government’s new enforcement approach.
However, the situation remains concerning on the safety front. In the last 24 hours alone, 1,438 road accidents took place across Punjab, claiming 16 lives and injuring 1,652 people. Out of the injured, 677 were shifted to hospitals, while 943 received first aid on the spot.
The government hopes that strict enforcement and awareness will help reduce violations and make Punjab’s roads safer for everyone.
