Arif Habib Group Wins Historic PIA Privatisation Bid for Rs 135 Billion

by Mahnoor Arif

The Arif Habib Consortium has emerged as the successful bidder in the long awaited privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines, securing a 75 percent stake for Rs135 billion. The deal follows a competitive, multi stage bidding process and marks one of the most significant privatisation moves in Pakistan’s recent economic history.

According to officials involved in the process, the Lucky Consortium finished as the second-highest bidder with an offer of Rs134 billion, narrowly missing the top position. Airblue also took part in the earlier stages of bidding but did not make it to the final round. The close margin between the top bids highlighted strong interest from the private sector in reviving the national flag carrier.

Government representatives said the privatisation effort is part of broader economic reforms aimed at restructuring and restoring PIA, rather than simply selling state assets. For years, the airline has struggled with heavy losses, aging aircraft, and operational inefficiencies, placing a burden on public finances.

Under the approved plan, 92.5 percent of the proceeds from the sale will be directed toward improving PIA’s operations. This includes upgrading the fleet, enhancing passenger services, clearing liabilities, and strengthening safety and maintenance standards. Officials believe this approach will give the airline a realistic chance to regain market confidence.

Authorities have expressed confidence that private sector management will bring efficiency, transparency, and innovation to PIA. They also expect the deal to attract further investment into Pakistan’s aviation sector, create jobs, and improve connectivity.

If managed effectively, the privatisation could mark a turning point for PIA, transforming it from a loss making entity into a competitive regional airline once again.
