NCCIA Issues Alerts for New Year’s Shared Gifted Links Could Hack WhatsApp Accounts

by Mahnoor Arif

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has issued a strong warning to WhatsApp users about fake New Year gift messages that could lead to account hacking. According to the agency, cybercriminals are using attractive messages and congratulatory offers to trick people into clicking malicious links.

These messages often claim that the user has received a New Year gift or reward. Once the link is opened, spyware may be installed on the phone without the user realizing it. NCCIA explained that such spyware can read private chats, record phone calls, track keystrokes, and even monitor personal activity on the device.

Officials warned that while WhatsApp uses end to end encryption, this protection does not stop attacks that rely on malicious links. Hackers can bypass security by spreading spyware through fake websites, unofficial app versions, or advanced zero click exploits. In some cases, the phone can be compromised without any action from the user.

NCCIA has advised users to stay alert and avoid clicking on links received from unknown or untrusted sources. Users should never share WhatsApp verification codes with anyone, even if the message appears to come from a known contact. Sharing these codes can give hackers direct access to the account.

The agency has urged extra caution for journalists, public figures, and other high profile individuals, as they are often targeted in such attacks. Regular software updates and using only official app stores are also recommended.

NCCIA stressed that public awareness is key to preventing cybercrime. By staying cautious and informed, users can protect their privacy, personal data, and WhatsApp accounts from digital threats, especially during festive seasons like the New Year.
