Supreme Court Orders Medical Board for Imran Khan’s Eye Check-Up, Allows Phone Contact with Sons

by Mahnoor Arif

The Supreme Court of Pakistan has instructed authorities to arrange a specialist eye examination for former Prime Minister Imran Khan and allow him telephone contact with his sons.

The order was issued during a hearing focused on concerns regarding medical facilities available in prison.

A two member bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi directed prison officials to ensure that the former premier receives healthcare facilities comparable to those provided to other inmates.

The court underscored that individuals held in state custody are entitled to equal treatment under the law, including access to necessary medical care.

During the proceedings, the Attorney General informed the bench that practical arrangements for the eye consultation would be finalized before February 16. The assurance was noted by the court as it reviewed compliance measures.

While the bench approved medical access and phone communication, it declined a request seeking the presence of family members during the medical examination.

The judges observed that although family support may be desirable, the primary obligation of providing healthcare rests with the state.

The hearing formed part of broader discussions about prison conditions and the adequacy of medical services available to detainees.

The court’s directives aim to ensure that constitutional rights and basic standards of care are maintained for all individuals in custody, regardless of their status or background.
