Flight Chaos! Over 500 Flights Cancelled in Pakistan Due to Middle East Tensions

by Mahnoor Arif

Pakistan’s airports have faced major flight cancellations over the past three days as rising tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, Israel, and the United States disrupted air travel. More than 500 domestic and international flights were cancelled, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and creating chaos at major airports. Airlines say the disruptions are linked to concerns about regional airspace safety and temporary closures of key flight routes.

Flights from Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), private Pakistani carriers, and foreign airlines bound for destinations in the Middle East and beyond were most affected. Routes to Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Sharjah, Dubai, Turkey, Iraq, and Iran saw widespread cancellations and delays, according to airport officials and carrier statements. Only flights to Saudi Arabia continued operating normally as authorities kept that air route open.

The impact was felt at major airports including Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International, and Islamabad International Airport. At Jinnah Airport, many aircraft were diverted due to limited parking space, forcing airport staff to manage congestion on the ground. Some passengers reported long waits at ticket counters and information desks as they sought updates on new flight schedules or refunds.

Air cargo operations were also hit. Several cargo flights were suspended, affecting the movement of goods such as perishables, medical supplies, and commercial freight. Businesses that rely on air freight warned that ongoing disruptions could slow supply chains and reach markets later than planned.

Airlines explained that they adjusted their flight schedules in response to airspace closures and safety concerns issued by civil aviation authorities. Officials said decisions were taken to protect passenger and crew safety, as several Middle Eastern air routes faced temporary restrictions due to heightened military activity in the region.

Passengers were urged to stay in touch with their airlines for updates on new departure times and ticket rebooking options. Airport authorities also said they are working to assist stranded travelers with transit support as the situation evolves.

Analysts say that continued instability in the Middle East could prolong aviation disruptions in the region, affecting travel and cargo links for countries like Pakistan that depend heavily on overseas routes through Gulf airspace.
