Makkah Set to Get It’s Own International Airport

by Mahnoor Arif

Makkah is set to get its own international airport for the first time. The Royal Commission for Makkah City and the Holy Sites has officially approved plans to build a modern airport to serve millions of visitors every year.

Saleh Al-Rasheed, CEO of the Royal Commission, confirmed that feasibility studies are complete. Strategic and economic approvals have also been given. The new airport will be developed to global standards and will make travel easier for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, as well as local residents.

Currently, most pilgrims fly into King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah and then travel by road to Makkah. The new airport aims to reduce travel time and ease heavy traffic during peak seasons.

The project will involve the private sector through suitable investment models. Officials have assured that the new airport will not harm the operations or economy of nearby airports, including the one in Jeddah.

This development is part of Saudi Arabia’s broader plan to improve infrastructure under Vision 2030. It will also support the goal of welcoming 30 million Umrah visitors and increasing Hajj capacity in the coming years.

Along with the airport, plans for a metro system in Makkah are also moving forward to improve transport inside the holy city.

The announcement has been welcomed by pilgrims and travel experts. It is expected to bring better connectivity, comfort, and convenience for millions who visit Makkah every year. Exact location, timeline, and cost details will be announced later.
