Imports from India Hit Three Year High Despite Tensions

by Hameed

Despite recent tensions and continued border closures, trade between Pakistan and India remained active in May, with Pakistani imports from India reaching their highest level in three years.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan, imports during the July to May period of fiscal year 2025 amounted to 211.5 million dollars. This marks an increase from 207 million dollars in the same period last year and 190 million dollars in fiscal year 2023.

The figures show that, despite strained political ties, Pakistan continues to import goods from India. However, the trade relationship remains heavily one-sided.

Pakistan’s exports to India have stayed extremely low. In May alone, Pakistan exported goods worth just 1,000 dollars to India. Over the entire July to May period of the current fiscal year, total exports amounted to only 0.5 million dollars. This large gap in trade shows that while Pakistan is importing regularly, its exports to India remain minimal.

Trade between the two countries has been limited since 2019, when Pakistan suspended official trade with India due to political tensions, especially concerning the Kashmir issue. Some trade still takes place under special arrangements, mostly involving essential items.

This trade imbalance reflects the ongoing impact of political issues on economic ties. While there is potential for stronger trade between the two countries, current conditions continue to limit exports and cooperation. The recent data highlights the need for a more balanced and stable trade relationship in the future, should political circumstances allow it.
