Historic Move! Pakistan Approves First Ferry Licence to Iran, Gulf States

by Hameed

Pakistan’s Ministry of Maritime Affairs has taken a major step by issuing the country’s first international ferry service licence. The licence has been granted to Sea Keepers, allowing the company to run ferry routes between Pakistan, Iran, and GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting of the Licensing Committee, which included representatives from the Ministries of Maritime Affairs, Defence, Foreign Affairs, and Interior, along with key officials from the shipping sector.

This move aims to boost regional connectivity and provide a new, affordable option for travel and trade by sea. The ferry service will benefit workers, religious pilgrims, and travellers who often visit Gulf countries, making transport easier and more cost-effective compared to air travel.

Officials believe this step could transform Pakistan’s maritime industry by reducing pressure on airlines and encouraging more sea-based transport. It also highlights the government’s focus on improving infrastructure and offering alternatives to traditional travel routes.

The launch of international ferry services reflects Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening ties with neighbouring countries and expanding trade opportunities through safe and efficient sea routes.

The approval of Sea Keepers marks the beginning of a new chapter in Pakistan’s transport sector, with the potential for more such services in the future. This is expected to bring long-term benefits not only for passengers but also for businesses relying on smooth cross-border trade.
