Adidas executives recently visited the Indigenous town of Villa Hidalgo Yalalag in Oaxaca, Mexico, to issue a direct apology for a shoe design that caused cultural appropriation concerns. The controversy began when the company released the “Oaxaca Slip On,” created by designer Willy Chavarria, which looked very similar to the traditional huarache sandals worn by the community.
During the visit, representatives of Adidas Mexico admitted their mistake and expressed deep regret for not consulting local artisans before launching the product. They assured the people of Villa Hidalgo Yalalag that such an incident would not be repeated in the future.
To rebuild trust, Adidas pledged to work with local craftspeople and communities to create designs that truly respect and highlight Mexico’s cultural heritage.
The apology took place in the town square, where community members gathered alongside musicians performing traditional music. The gathering created an environment of both accountability and dialogue, where the voices of the Indigenous artisans were heard and valued.
This issue first gained nationwide attention earlier in the month when Mexico’s president criticized Adidas for exploiting Indigenous designs without permission. His comments also stressed the need for stronger laws to protect the cultural heritage of Indigenous groups.
Local leaders welcomed Adidas’ apology and commitment. They highlighted that their crafts are not just products but part of their identity, history, and source of livelihood. For them, preserving these traditions is vital, and international brands must show respect by recognizing their originality.
