Nearly 90% of Electric Bikes in Pakistan Reportedly Using Unsafe Batteries, Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA)

The Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA) has raised serious concerns about the growing number of electric bikes in the country using outdated lead-acid batteries.

According to PAMA, almost 90% of the e-bikes being sold in Pakistan are fitted with these old-style batteries, which are often falsely promoted as “graphene batteries” to mislead customers.

PAMA’s Director General, Abdul Waheed Khan, called on the government to immediately stop giving subsidies to such low-quality electric vehicles.

He said that these poor-performing batteries not only reduce the efficiency and life of electric bikes but also risk damaging public trust in electric mobility. If buyers continue to face such issues, it could slow down the overall adoption of cleaner, electric transport in Pakistan.

He stressed that the purpose of government subsidies is to support innovation and encourage the use of reliable technology not to promote outdated or misleading products. The Director General also warned that without stricter regulations and proper quality checks, the local EV market could become flooded with substandard models.

Under the Pakistan Accelerated Vehicle Electrification (PAVE) Program 2025–30, the government has already allocated Rs. 122 billion in subsidies specifically for lithium-ion-based electric vehicles. These batteries are known for their higher energy capacity, longer life, and compliance with international safety standards.

PAMA urged both manufacturers and policymakers to ensure that only lithium-ion technology receives official support, so the country can move toward a sustainable, efficient, and trustworthy electric vehicle industry.
