Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is taking a bold step to strengthen journalism in Pakistan. Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has announced the establishment of a specialized “University of Investigation and Modern Journalism” that will be dedicated to the memory of late journalist Arshad Sharif, who was tragically killed in Kenya in 2022.
This announcement is significant for multiple reasons. Arshad Sharif was a prominent Pakistani journalist known for his fearless investigative reporting and hard-hitting journalism. By naming this institution after him, the provincial government is honoring his legacy while also sending a message about the kind of journalism they want to promote – courageous, ethical, and investigative.
The university won’t just be another media studies program. According to CM Afridi, the institution specifically aims to promote investigative reporting and strengthen media ethics across Pakistan.
In an era of fake news, clickbait journalism, and declining standards in media, a dedicated university focusing on proper investigative techniques and ethical practices could fill a critical gap in Pakistan’s journalism education landscape.
But that’s not all the Chief Minister announced. Afridi also unveiled an ambitious Revival Plan for Peshawar’s overall development. This comprehensive plan focuses on three key areas: modern infrastructure to bring the provincial capital up to contemporary standards, education initiatives to improve learning opportunities, and public welfare programs to enhance the quality of life for ordinary residents.
These announcements signal that the KP government is thinking beyond just routine governance. By investing in specialized education like journalism and broader urban development, they’re laying groundwork for long-term progress in the province.
