Sindh has taken an important step to support people with disabilities by introducing its first-ever sensor-equipped scanner stick for visually impaired individuals. This smart stick is designed to make life easier and safer for blind people by helping them detect obstacles around them.
According to Tauha Farooqi, the province is home to more than six million children and adults with special needs or physical and mental disabilities. Sindh is now using modern medical technology to empower such individuals, including people with autism and other disabilities.
This new device has been developed by the Biomedical Technology Department at NED University, one of Pakistan’s leading engineering institutions. The scanner stick is part of a series of innovative tools designed by the department to improve the daily lives of people with mental, physical, and paralytic conditions.
To make this project a reality, an agreement has been signed between the Sindh Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities and NED University. Under this partnership, the project will be launched as a pilot scheme later this month.
In the first phase of the project, visually impaired citizens in Sindh will receive these smart scanner sticks free of cost. This initiative shows Sindh’s commitment to creating an inclusive society where people with disabilities can live with greater confidence, independence, and dignity. It also highlights how technology can be used to bring real change in people’s lives.
