Rare Arabian Humpback Whales Spotted in Pakistan’s Coastal Waters Near Gwadar

by Mahnoor Arif

A rare and exciting event has taken place off Pakistan’s coast, a pod of at least six endangered Arabian humpback whales was recently spotted near Gwadar, around 11 nautical miles south of the headland.

The sighting was reported by WWF Pakistan and was first noticed by local fishermen, who saw the whales moving from west to east through the Arabian Sea. Such sightings are extremely uncommon, making this discovery an important moment for Pakistan’s marine environment.

Experts say this event is a positive sign for marine biodiversity in Pakistan. The presence of these whales suggests that the country’s coastal waters continue to support rare and important species. Conservationists hope that such sightings will raise awareness about the need to protect marine life and reduce threats like pollution, fishing nets, and ship traffic.

The Arabian humpback whale is one of the world’s rarest whale species. Unlike most whales, it is non-migratory, meaning it stays in the Arabian Sea throughout the year. Sadly, this species was almost wiped out due to whaling in the 1960s, and today only a small population remains.

WWF officials praised the efforts of local fishermen for reporting the sighting, saying it highlights the importance of community involvement in protecting marine life. This discovery offers new hope for the conservation of these majestic creatures and for the preservation of Pakistan’s rich ocean biodiversity.
