by Mahnoor Arif

In a major step toward strengthening Pakistan’s technology and education sectors, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the establishment of Google’s first-ever Chromebook manufacturing plant in the province. This project aims to boost digital learning, local production, and innovation across Pakistan.

The decision was made during a high-level meeting with representatives from Google for Education and Tech Valley, led by Kevin Kalis, Global Director of Google for Education, and Umar Farooq, CEO of Tech Valley. The meeting focused on enhancing access to affordable digital tools for students and teachers, improving e-learning infrastructure, and promoting skill development in schools and universities.

The Chromebook plant will not only create new employment opportunities but also support Pakistan’s goal of becoming a regional hub for technology manufacturing. By producing Chromebooks locally, the project is expected to reduce import costs, make digital devices more affordable, and encourage the use of modern classroom technology across Punjab.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that the initiative aligns with her government’s vision of “Digital Punjab”, ensuring that every child has access to quality education through technology.

Officials from Google praised Punjab’s efforts in promoting tech-based education and assured continued collaboration for teacher training, digital literacy programs, and school digitization.

The establishment of this plant marks a historic milestone, the first time Google will manufacture Chromebooks in Pakistan, signaling growing confidence in the country’s digital economy and talent potential.
