The Government of Pakistan is reportedly considering the creation of a new top military position titled “Commander of Defence Forces (CDF)” to provide unified leadership over the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The proposal is expected to be part of the 27th Constitutional Amendment, aimed at strengthening coordination among the three branches of the armed forces.
According to official sources, the proposed CDF role would serve as the highest military authority, responsible for strategic decision-making, national defence planning, and ensuring seamless communication between the services. This position would also serve as the main link between the military leadership and the civilian government, particularly the Prime Minister and the Defence Ministry.
The idea behind the move is to modernise Pakistan’s defence structure and make it more efficient in dealing with regional and global security challenges. It would also align Pakistan’s military command system with those of other major powers that have unified defence commands.
If approved, the new position could mark one of the most significant reforms in Pakistan’s defence establishment in decades. However, officials note that discussions are still ongoing, and details regarding the scope, tenure, and appointment process of the Commander of Defence Forces are yet to be finalized.
Analysts believe the move could enhance strategic coordination, resource management, and joint operations, ensuring that Pakistan’s defence system remains cohesive and well-prepared for future challenges.
