Field Marshal Asim Munir’s Tenure to Restart after Appointment as Chief of Defence Forces

by Mahnoor Arif

Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir will see his tenure restarted following his appointment as Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), according to a new bill passed by the National Assembly.

The legislation grants the CDF position a five-year term starting from the date of official notification. This means Field Marshal Munir’s service period will begin afresh rather than continuing from his current COAS appointment.

Under the new framework, the government will clearly define the responsibilities and duties of both the Chief of Defence Forces and the Chief of Army Staff. A key aspect of the CDF role includes overseeing the restructuring and integration of Pakistan’s Armed Forces to improve coordination between different military branches.

The bill also introduces changes to the appointment process for the National Strategic Command. According to the new legislation, the Prime Minister will appoint the commander of this critical defense body for a three-year term, with provisions allowing possible extensions based on requirements.

This legislation represents a significant shift in Pakistan’s military command structure, establishing a clearer hierarchy and distribution of defense responsibilities. The creation of the CDF position aims to enhance strategic planning and operational efficiency across the Armed Forces.

Military analysts suggest these changes reflect efforts to modernize Pakistan’s defense framework and create better inter-service coordination. The five-year tenure is designed to provide stability and continuity in military leadership during a period of regional security challenges.
