Pakistan’s federal cabinet has given the green light to a new ferry service connecting Gwadar with Oman, marking a significant step toward enhancing regional connectivity and trade opportunities.
The maritime route aims to boost economic activity, facilitate tourism, and strengthen ties between Pakistan and Oman. This initiative comes after Pakistan issued its first-ever ferry license in August to international operator Sea Keepers, paving the way for commercial maritime passenger services.
Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced that an Omani delegation is expected to visit Pakistan soon to finalize operational arrangements. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both countries is anticipated to be signed shortly, outlining the framework for the ferry service.
The new route promises multiple benefits for the region. It will provide a more convenient and cost-effective travel option for Pakistani expatriates working in Oman and the broader Gulf region, who currently rely on expensive air travel. The service will also open new opportunities for tourism between the two nations.
Government officials believe the ferry service will play a crucial role in transforming Gwadar into a thriving economic hub. The port city, already central to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), stands to gain significantly from improved maritime connectivity.
Beyond economic advantages, the initiative is expected to strengthen cultural and people-to-people ties between Pakistan and Oman. The maritime corridor represents a practical step toward regional integration and cooperation.
The exact launch date and operational details will be announced once the MoU is finalized between both governments.
