Islamabad is gearing up for a major development boost as construction begins next month on a new five-kilometer road connecting the city directly to the M1 Motorway through Margalla Road. This long-awaited link is expected to significantly cut travel time, ease congestion, and improve access for thousands of daily commuters.
The project is being executed through a shared arrangement between the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the National Highway Authority (NHA). CDA will construct 2.7 kilometers of the stretch, while the remaining 2.3 kilometers fall under NHA, funded through the Public Sector Development Program. The federal government has already allocated six billion rupees for NHA’s portion, covering land acquisition and construction expenses.
A key feature of the plan includes a new interchange at 17th Avenue in the H-16 sector, designed to smooth the flow of traffic and improve connectivity with nearby residential and educational zones. According to officials, tendering processes and formal approvals are already in progress, ensuring the project moves forward without delays.
The Margalla Road–Motorway link is expected to bring long-term benefits for Islamabad residents by easing pressure on existing routes such as Srinagar Highway and GT Road. It will also support future urban expansion, reduce fuel consumption caused by congestion, and enhance mobility for those traveling between Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and northern regions.
Authorities believe the project will not only improve daily commuting but also contribute to better city planning, making Islamabad more accessible and efficient in the years ahead.
