Imran Khan is Safe and Healthy, Uzma Khanum

by Mahnoor Arif

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s sister, Uzma Khanum, confirmed on Tuesday that her brother is safe and in good health following a meeting at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. The meeting took place after weeks of restricted access to the imprisoned PTI founder.

Speaking to the media after the 30-minute meeting, Uzma Khanum stated: “Imran Khan’s health is perfectly fine” Fimela. Her statement helped put to rest growing concerns and rumors that had circulated about the former premier’s wellbeing during the extended period when family members were denied visitation rights.

However, Uzma also raised concerns about his detention conditions. She revealed that her brother “was very angry and said that they are subjecting him to mental torture. He is kept in his room throughout the day, with only a little time to go outside, and there is no communication with anyone”.

The jail visit came after repeated denials to family members and party leaders seeking to meet Khan. Uzma was accompanied by scores of PTI supporters who gathered outside the jail as she went inside the prison to meet her brother.

The meeting was permitted on the same day PTI staged protests outside the Islamabad High Court and Adiala Jail, demanding implementation of court orders regarding visitation rights.

According to reports, no one had been allowed to meet Imran Khan or his wife Bushra Bibi since October 27, creating significant concern among family members and party supporters. Last week, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi staged a sit-in outside the prison after being denied access for the eighth consecutive time.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan expressed grave concerns over reports regarding restrictive detention conditions, stating that “regular and unhindered access to immediate family and counsel is a fundamental safeguard against isolation and misuse of detention powers”. The rights body called on the government to ensure all practices comply with constitutional protections and international standards for humane treatment.

Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 and faces multiple cases, including corruption and terrorism charges, since his removal from power through a no-confidence motion in 2022.

Despite various rumors about his health circulating in recent weeks, both government officials and jail authorities have maintained that Khan remains in good condition.
