After Death of Two Girls in Road Accident, Settlement Secures Release of IHC Judge’s Son

by Mahnoor Arif

The son of a judge from Islamabad High Court (IHC) has been released after families of two young women, who died in a tragic accident, agreed to a settlement. The decision has reignited public debate over justice and accountability in high-profile cases.

The accident happened late at night near Secretariat Chowk in Islamabad, when the accused, identified as the 16-year-old son of IHC judge Justice Mohammed Asif, allegedly struck a scooter carrying the two women, killing them instantly. The vehicle then reportedly fled the scene, prompting police to register a case under charges including rash driving and manslaughter.

Following his arrest and a four-day police remand, the suspect was produced before a judicial magistrate. During the court proceedings, both families formally pardoned him: one victim’s brother appeared in person, while the other family submitted statements online. The magistrate accepted the pardon and granted bail, ordering the release of the accused.

The case has drawn intense public scrutiny and criticism. Many see the outcome as a troubling example of how influence and social status can affect legal consequences, raising concerns over whether justice for victims can be equitably served. Some observers say such reconciliations, especially in fatal accident cases, undermine public trust in the judicial process.

Authorities have, for now, concluded criminal prosecution following the pardon and bail. But legal experts and civil-society activists argue the incident underscores a larger problem: that powerful individuals may avoid full accountability through social settlements.

As debate continues, the episode may prompt deeper reflection on the balance between legal justice, societal norms, and victims’ rights in Pakistan’s judicial system.
