Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has reported a significant oil and gas discovery from the Baragzai X-01 exploratory well in the Nashpa Block, located in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This achievement marks an important milestone for Pakistan’s energy sector and indigenous resource development.
The well was drilled in collaboration with Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), with PPL and GHPL as joint partners. It reached a depth of 5,170 meters in the Kingriali Formation. A successful Drill Stem Test (DST) confirmed the well’s productivity, showing a flow of 2,280 barrels of oil per day and 5.6 million standard cubic feet of gas (MMSCFD). This is the first hydrocarbon discovery from this formation in the Nashpa Block, highlighting its potential for further exploration.
Officials from PPL stated that this discovery will help boost Pakistan’s indigenous energy supply, reduce dependency on imports, and strengthen national energy reserves. The find also opens new opportunities for investment and development in the region, which can support local employment and infrastructure growth.
Experts say such discoveries are crucial for Pakistan, as increasing domestic production can stabilize energy prices and support long-term economic growth. PPL’s announcement reflects continued progress in the country’s upstream sector, which has seen several successful exploration projects in recent years.
With energy demand rising nationwide, this discovery in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is expected to play a vital role in meeting the country’s needs and contributing to sustainable energy security. It underscores Pakistan’s commitment to developing its natural resources efficiently.
