Disney’s Zootopia 2 has made box office history by crossing the $1 billion mark globally in just 17 days, becoming the fastest animated movie and fastest PG-rated film ever to reach this milestone. The sequel has proven that audiences worldwide are hungry for quality family entertainment.
The film opened on November 26, 2025, with a record-breaking $559.5 million over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, marking the highest global animated opening of all time. This achievement surpassed all previous Disney animated releases and became the highest global debut of 2025.
With a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore, the movie has earned both critical acclaim and overwhelming viewer approval.
Zootopia 2 is only the second Hollywood film in 2025 to join the billion-dollar club, following Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake. The sequel has now earned $232.7 million domestically and $753.4 million internationally. This milestone also marks the first back-to-back billion-dollar releases for Walt Disney Animation Studios, following last year’s Moana 2, which earned $1.059 billion worldwide.
The film’s performance in China has been particularly remarkable. It earned a massive $272 million during its opening weekend there, becoming the highest animated opening ever for a non-local title in the country. Within just five days, it became the highest-grossing non-local animated film of all time in China.
Currently, the film has earned approximately $447 million in China alone, making it the second-biggest Hollywood release in the country’s history, behind only Avengers: Endgame.
Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Zootopia 2 reunites rabbit police officer Judy Hopps and con artist fox Nick Wilde as they investigate a mysterious new reptilian resident played by Ke Huy Quan. The film’s success has also reignited interest in the original franchise, with Zootopia and Zootopia+ being viewed for more than 725 million hours globally on Disney+.
With the Christmas holidays approaching, Zootopia 2 is expected to continue its impressive run and potentially surpass the original 2016 film, which topped out at $1.03 billion worldwide.
