Pakistan Imported Mobile Phones Worth Rs. 226 Billion in First 5 Months

by Mahnoor Arif

Pakistan’s mobile phone imports have seen a sharp increase in the first five months of the 2025–26 fiscal year, reaching Rs 226 billion ($801 million). This represents a growth of over 40% compared to the same period last year, highlighting strong consumer demand and active market trends.

According to industry sources, the increase in imports was driven by higher sales of smartphones and feature phones, as consumers upgraded their devices. November 2025, in particular, saw a noticeable month-on-month rise in shipments, reflecting the ongoing appetite for new technology and international brands.

Despite the surge in imports, Pakistan’s local mobile phone manufacturing remains robust. Millions of handsets, including smartphones and 2G devices, continue to be assembled domestically. Local production has helped meet a significant portion of demand while also generating employment and supporting the electronics industry.

The import figures indicate a growing reliance on international technology, particularly for high-end smartphones and specialized devices that are not yet produced locally. Analysts note that balancing imports with local production will be important for controlling costs and ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.

Government officials and industry experts are encouraging further investment in domestic manufacturing and assembly lines, aiming to reduce dependency on imports and strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global electronics market.

Overall, the mobile phone sector continues to grow rapidly in Pakistan. Rising imports reflect strong consumer interest, while local manufacturing provides an essential foundation. The trend highlights both the opportunities and challenges for Pakistan as it seeks to expand its technology production capabilities while meeting domestic demand.
