A special court has sentenced former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to 17 years of imprisonment each in the Toshakhana 2 case. The verdict relates to the alleged illegal purchase of a luxury Bulgari jewellery set that was gifted to Imran Khan by the Saudi crown prince during his time in office.

According to the court’s ruling, the jewellery set was worth around Rs 80 million but was purchased at a much lower declared price. The court stated that this caused a financial loss to the national exchequer. In addition to the prison sentences, both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were fined Rs 16.4 million each.

The court concluded that the case involved misuse of authority and breach of trust. Government representatives welcomed the decision, calling it lawful and in line with the constitution. They said the verdict showed that accountability applies to everyone, regardless of political status.

On the other hand, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf strongly rejected the ruling. Party leaders described the judgment as politically motivated and claimed it was part of continued pressure on their leadership. PTI has announced plans to challenge the verdict in higher courts.

The Toshakhana refers to a government department that stores gifts received by public officials from foreign leaders. Rules require such gifts to be declared and purchased through a transparent process if officials wish to keep them.

The verdict has sparked strong reactions across the country. Supporters of Imran Khan have expressed anger and concern, while others say the decision reinforces the rule of law. The case adds to ongoing political tension in Pakistan and is expected to remain a major topic of public debate in the coming days.
