The Punjab government has announced a major rural development plan under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s Model Village Programme, aiming to bring modern city like services to hundreds of villages across the province.
In the first phase, 469 villages from 10 divisions have been selected for the initiative. The programme focuses on improving basic infrastructure and public services to raise living standards in rural areas and reduce the gap between urban and village life.
Punjab Local Government Minister Zeeshan Rafique reviewed the progress of the Model Village Programme during a high level meeting. Senior officials, including Local Government Secretary Shakeel Ahmed Mian, also attended the session, where updates on the Lahore Development Programme were discussed alongside rural projects.
According to officials, the selected villages will receive upgraded road networks, improved drainage and sewerage systems, better waste management, and enhanced sanitation facilities. Plans also include access to clean drinking water, improved street lighting, and upgraded public spaces to make villages safer and more livable.
The government says the programme is designed to deliver long term benefits rather than short term fixes. By strengthening local infrastructure, the initiative aims to support education, health services, and small scale economic activity in rural communities.
Officials believe the project will also help control rural to urban migration by improving opportunities and quality of life within villages. Sustainable development practices are expected to be part of the rollout to ensure efficient use of resources.
The Punjab government has indicated that more villages may be included in future phases based on performance and available funding. If implemented effectively, the Model Village Programme could become a key step toward balanced development across the province.
