The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to move Bangladesh’s matches in the 2026 T20 World Cup from India to Sri Lanka, raising concerns about player safety and the overall environment for the team.
According to BCB officials, the request is linked to recent developments involving Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman. He was released by Kolkata Knight Riders from the Indian Premier League following instructions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The decision reportedly came amid growing political and religious pressure in India, which has caused unease within Bangladesh’s cricketing circles.
The BCB believes these events highlight potential risks for Bangladeshi players if they compete in India during high-profile tournaments. Officials say the board’s priority is the physical and mental well-being of its players, especially during a global event like the T20 World Cup.
Bangladesh’s matches were initially scheduled to be played in Kolkata and Mumbai in February 2026. However, the BCB is now reviewing its participation in India-based fixtures and plans to seek detailed clarifications from both the ICC and IPL authorities. The board wants clear assurances regarding security arrangements, crowd control, and the role of non-cricket factors in team-related decisions.
While Sri Lanka has been suggested as an alternative venue, the ICC has not yet issued an official response. Any change in venue would require coordination with host boards and tournament organizers.
The situation has sparked debate within the cricketing community about the impact of politics on sport and the responsibility of global bodies to ensure neutral and safe conditions for all teams.
