‘Punajbi Zaban Te Adab’! Govt University Makes Punjabi Compulsory Subject

by Mahnoor Arif

In a major step toward promoting regional languages and cultural heritage, Government College Women University Faisalabad (GCWUF) has made “Punjabi Zaban Te Adab” a compulsory subject for undergraduate students. The course will be taught as a two credit hour requirement across several academic faculties.

According to the university, the decision applies to students enrolled in the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Humanities and Languages, and Management Sciences. The move is aimed at strengthening students’ connection with the Punjabi language, its rich literature, and long standing cultural traditions.

University officials say the course is designed to help students better understand their roots and develop respect for Pakistan’s linguistic diversity. Punjabi is one of the most widely spoken languages in the country, yet it has often received limited formal academic attention. By making it a required subject, GCWUF hopes to address this gap.

The course will introduce students to basic Punjabi language skills, classical and modern Punjabi literature, and important cultural themes. It will also explore the role of Punjabi in shaping regional identity and social values.

GCWUF stated that the initiative aligns with its broader vision of inclusive education and holistic student development. The university believes that exposure to indigenous languages can improve cultural awareness, communication skills, and critical thinking.

Education experts have welcomed the move, calling it a positive example for other institutions. They say promoting regional languages at the university level helps preserve cultural heritage and ensures that future generations remain connected to their linguistic and cultural history.

The step is being seen as a meaningful effort to give Punjabi its due place in formal education.
