Pakistan Inaugurates First-Ever Ferry Terminal at Karachi Port

by Mahnoor Arif

Pakistan has officially inaugurated its first ever ferry terminal at Karachi Port Trust (KPT), marking an important milestone for the country’s maritime sector. The project is being seen as a major step toward promoting coastal tourism, improving regional connectivity, and strengthening Pakistan’s blue economy.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry inaugurated the terminal and said the initiative will introduce safe, modern, and sustainable passenger travel by sea. He added that ferry services will offer a new and affordable travel option while reducing pressure on road networks. The project is also expected to encourage private sector investment in maritime transport and tourism.

According to officials, ferry services are likely to begin later this month. These services will connect coastal areas and may also support future regional routes. Authorities believe the terminal will create new job opportunities and support related sectors such as hospitality, transport, logistics, and small businesses around the port area.

The ferry terminal is part of a broader plan to modernize Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure. Other initiatives include the Fishing Technology Museum and the Mahi Dost app, which aims to support fishermen with digital tools and real time information. Together, these projects reflect a growing focus on innovation, sustainability, and the preservation of maritime heritage.

Experts say coastal tourism remains largely untapped in Pakistan despite its long coastline. The new ferry terminal could help unlock this potential by making sea travel safer and more accessible for locals and tourists alike.

With this launch, Pakistan takes a significant step toward diversifying its transport system and boosting economic activity linked to the sea.
