Pakistan to Receive 10 Million Gallons of Water Daily From New Dam

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has taken a major step toward addressing Islamabad’s water needs with the Shahdara Dam project, which is expected to supply 10 million gallons of water daily to the city’s residents. This initiative comes amid rising water demand in the twin cities and aims to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply for domestic and municipal use.

CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa instructed officials to start land acquisition for the project, covering about 25 acres, and to complete the detailed design work. The project follows a feasibility study conducted by WAPDA, which includes plans for water conveyance and the construction of a treatment plant to ensure safe and clean water supply for Islamabad.

Before beginning land acquisition, a detailed survey by Suparco will be carried out, and all legal and regulatory requirements will be strictly followed to ensure smooth progress. The detailed designs and PC-1 proposal for the dam will later be submitted to the CDA’s Development Working Party and the committee responsible for water management in Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

The Shahdara Dam is expected to not only improve water availability but also support long-term urban planning, reduce dependency on other sources, and meet the growing needs of households, businesses, and public institutions.

Officials hope that, once completed, the project will provide Islamabad with a stable water supply, contributing to better living conditions and supporting the twin cities’ sustainable growth. The CDA has stressed that careful planning, environmental consideration, and community engagement will guide all stages of the project.

Overall, the Shahdara Dam represents a significant step toward addressing Islamabad’s water challenges and securing resources for the city’s future.
