by Mahnoor Arif

Pakistan has announced a major step toward its digital future, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirming a $1 billion investment in artificial intelligence by 2030. The announcement was made during the launch of Indus AI Week 2026 in Islamabad, a national event focused on emerging technologies and innovation.

The prime minister said the investment aims to build a strong and inclusive AI ecosystem that supports education, employment, and economic growth. A key part of the plan is to introduce artificial intelligence education in schools and universities, ensuring that students are prepared for future jobs in a rapidly changing global economy.

To strengthen research and innovation, the government will offer 1,000 fully funded PhD scholarships in AI to talented students from across the country. In addition, a large-scale training program will be launched to equip one million non-IT professionals with basic AI skills, helping them adapt to modern workplaces and improve productivity.

Officials believe AI can play a vital role in transforming key sectors such as agriculture, industry, healthcare, and technology. From smart farming solutions to efficient industrial processes, AI is expected to help Pakistan address long-standing challenges and create new opportunities.

The initiative also focuses on empowering young people by giving them access to advanced skills and global knowledge. By investing early and at scale, Pakistan hopes to position itself as a competitive player in the regional and global tech landscape.

The government views this AI roadmap as a long-term investment in people, innovation, and sustainable economic development.
