Safety First! Punjab to Modernize Rescue Services Ahead of Flood Risks

by Mahnoor Arif

The Punjab government has approved Rs1.415 billion to upgrade rescue services across the province in preparation for potential flood threats. The decision comes as authorities step up efforts to strengthen disaster response systems ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

The allocated funds will be used to purchase modern rescue equipment designed for high risk flood situations. This includes inflatable boats, high powered motors, jet skis, amphibious truck boats, airboats, and 30 ton landing crafts. These additions are expected to improve mobility in flooded urban and rural areas where traditional vehicles often fail.

In a move toward technology driven emergency management, officials also plan to introduce water rescue drones and surveillance drones. These tools will help teams assess flood conditions, locate stranded individuals, and coordinate operations more efficiently. Remote controlled life buoys will also be deployed to assist victims in strong water currents without putting rescuers at immediate risk.

Public safety measures are being expanded as well. Around 40,000 life jackets for both children and adults will be procured to reduce casualties during emergencies. Authorities believe this step will significantly enhance preparedness at community levels.

Punjab frequently faces flooding due to heavy rains and rising river levels, which can damage infrastructure and displace families. By investing in advanced rescue tools and safety equipment, the government aims to ensure quicker response times and better coordination during crises.

Officials say the modernization plan reflects a broader commitment to disaster resilience. The upgrades are expected to protect lives, safeguard property, and strengthen confidence in the province’s emergency response capabilities.
