Full Takeover! PIA Set to Become Fully Private as Arif Habib Plans to Buy Remaining 25% Shares

Pakistan International Airlines is moving closer to full privatization as the Arif Habib Group led consortium plans to purchase the remaining 25 percent shares of the airline. Once the deal is completed, PIA will operate entirely under private ownership.

The consortium had already acquired a 75 percent stake in December 2025 for Rs 135 billion. With the planned purchase of the remaining shares, the group will gain complete control of the national carrier. Chief Executive Officer Shahid Ali Habib has stated that a formal decision is expected in April. The payment for the remaining shares is likely to be completed within 12 months of approval.

After the full takeover, PIA will function as a private airline without government appointed board members. This marks a major shift in the airline’s history, as it has operated under state control for decades.

The consortium includes major business names such as Fatima Fertilizer, Fauji Fertilizer Company, Lake City, AKD Group, and The City School. Together, they aim to improve PIA’s financial health and operational performance.

Planned reforms include better customer service, improved safety standards, and expansion of flight routes. Analysts believe that full private control may help PIA respond more quickly to market demands and reduce long standing financial losses, while improving efficiency and competitiveness in the regional aviation market.
