SUPARCO Launches ‘PAK-SBAS’ Navigation System at Cholistan Rally

by Mahnoor Arif

Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission has introduced its new navigation system, Pak SBAS, during the 2026 edition of the Cholistan Desert Rally. The launch marks an important step in Pakistan’s efforts to strengthen its space based services and improve positioning accuracy across different sectors.

Pak SBAS is built on Satellite Based Augmentation System technology. During the rally, the system demonstrated high positioning accuracy, stable signal performance, and reliable route guidance in the tough desert environment. The Cholistan desert, known for its harsh terrain and limited connectivity, provided a strong testing ground for the new system.

While the technology was showcased for rally drivers to support navigation in remote areas, officials said its use is not limited to motorsports. Pak SBAS can support disaster response operations by providing accurate location data during emergencies. It can also improve transport management, aviation safety, land surveying, and infrastructure planning. By reducing navigation errors, the system is expected to lower operational risks and project costs.

This development follows Pakistan’s recent progress in space technology, including the launch of its second indigenous Earth Observation Satellite, EO 2. Together, these initiatives reflect a broader strategy to enhance technological capacity and reduce reliance on foreign systems.

With Pak SBAS, SUPARCO aims to promote public safety, operational efficiency, and long term self reliance in satellite based navigation services.
