HEC Makes AI Course Mandatory for All Degree Programme

by Mahnoor Arif

The Higher Education Commission has directed all public and private universities across the country to introduce a mandatory three credit hour course on Artificial Intelligence for every undergraduate and postgraduate programme. The new requirement will take effect from Fall 2026.

According to the notification, the course is designed to build basic digital literacy and help students understand how AI systems work in everyday life. It will also cover ethical concerns, data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the broader social impact of automated decision making. The aim is not limited to technical training. Instead, the focus is on creating informed graduates who can critically engage with emerging technologies.

Universities have been given flexibility in implementation. Institutions may offer the subject as a standalone compulsory course, integrate it within existing degree structures, or design it as an interdisciplinary module relevant to specific fields such as business, health sciences, social sciences, or engineering. This approach allows universities to adjust content according to academic focus while meeting the core learning outcomes set by HEC.

Globally, universities are increasingly embedding AI education into general curricula as artificial intelligence reshapes industries ranging from finance and media to healthcare and governance. By making AI literacy compulsory, Pakistan is aligning its higher education framework with international trends.

Education experts view the decision as a step toward preparing students for a technology driven economy, where understanding AI tools and their ethical limits is becoming as essential as basic computer skills.
