Earthquake Strikes Multiple Cities Including Peshawar, Islamabad & Rawalpindi

by Mahnoor Arif

A powerful earthquake measuring around 5.6 on the Richter scale struck parts of northern Pakistan on Friday, shaking cities including Peshawar, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi.

The tremors were widely felt across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and adjoining areas, causing residents to rush out of their homes and offices for safety. Officials reported no immediate casualties or major structural damage in the initial hours after the quake.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department and seismic monitoring centres, the quake’s epicentre was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of roughly 73 kilometres. The Hindu Kush area is known for frequent seismic activity because of the collision between the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which makes northern Pakistan particularly prone to earthquakes.

Tremors were also felt in nearby districts such as Swat, Malakand, Lower Dir, Hangu, Bajaur, Kohat, Buner, Shangla, Swabi and Upper Dir. Many residents in Islamabad and Rawalpindi reported feeling strong shaking that lasted several seconds, prompting a rush outdoors.

Local disaster management officials said teams were being mobilised to inspect critical infrastructure and check for any hidden damage to roads, buildings and bridges.

This event follows other moderate earthquakes felt across the region in recent months, underscoring the persistent seismic risk in northern Pakistan.

Authorities regularly remind communities to be prepared and follow safety measures during quakes. Emergency services have urged residents to remain alert for possible aftershocks and to follow guidance from disaster management agencies.
