As Ramadan begins, health experts are urging people to avoid fried and sugary foods during sehri and iftar to maintain good health while fasting. Consuming excessive fried or sweet items can cause acidity, heartburn, and other digestive issues, experts say.

Dr. Rimsha Siddiqui from Aga Khan University Hospital emphasized that individuals with preexisting conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease should consult their doctors before observing fasts. Proper planning and mindful eating, she explained, are essential to prevent health complications.

At sehri, skipping the pre-dawn meal is discouraged. Experts recommend including fiber-rich foods such as whole wheat, barley, brown bread, eggs, and lentils. These items help sustain energy levels during the long hours of fasting and keep blood sugar stable.

During iftar, moderation is key. Health professionals suggest limiting sugary drinks and fried snacks, and instead focusing on water, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein sources. Gradual eating, rather than consuming large amounts at once, can reduce bloating and digestive discomfort.

In addition, staying hydrated throughout the non-fasting hours is crucial to prevent dehydration, fatigue, and headaches. Small meals spread over the evening can help maintain energy and support overall health during Ramadan.

By following these guidelines, people can observe the holy month safely, reduce the risk of digestive or cardiovascular problems, and improve overall well-being. Mindful eating combined with adequate hydration ensures that fasting remains a positive spiritual and physical experience.
