OGDCL Discovers Oil & Gas Reserves in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

by Mahnoor Arif

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited has reported a fresh oil and gas discovery at the Baragzai X 01 well in the Nashpa Block, located in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The well was drilled in the Lumshiwal formation and tested through a cased hole drill stem test.

Initial results show production of around 225 barrels of oil per day and 1.01 million cubic feet of gas per day. Industry experts say such discoveries, even at moderate volumes, play an important role in reducing Pakistan’s reliance on imported fuel.

OGDCL holds a 65 percent working interest in the Nashpa Block. Other partners include Pakistan Petroleum Limited and Government Holdings Private Limited. The Nashpa Block has been a key producing area in recent years, contributing oil and gas to the national grid.

Pakistan faces ongoing energy challenges due to rising demand and high import costs. According to official data, a large portion of the country’s oil needs is met through imports, which puts pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Local exploration and production activities are therefore seen as vital for energy security.

Energy analysts note that continued investment in exploration, especially in provinces like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, can help stabilize supply. While the latest find may not dramatically change overall output, it strengthens domestic reserves and signals continued exploration success.

OGDCL has stated that further evaluation and development plans will follow to maximize production from the newly discovered reserves.
