Somalia Plans to Buy 24 JF-17 Jets From Pakistan in Rs. 2.51 Trillion Deal

by Mahnoor Arif

Somalia is reportedly in advanced negotiations with Pakistan to purchase 24 JF-17 Thunder fighter jets in a deal valued at around 900 million dollars, approximately Rs2.51 trillion. If finalized, this would mark the largest defence procurement by Mogadishu since the collapse of the Somali state in 1991.

The discussions focus on the JF-17 Block III variant, the latest and most advanced version of the aircraft. Developed jointly by Pakistan Aeronautical Complex and China’s Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, the Block III features an active electronically scanned array radar, enhanced avionics, and compatibility with beyond visual range missiles. The proposed package reportedly includes pilot training, weapons integration, maintenance support, and logistics services.

Somalia has been rebuilding its security forces in recent years as it seeks to counter insurgent groups and strengthen national defence capabilities. Analysts suggest that acquiring modern multirole fighter jets would significantly improve Somalia’s air defence and strike capacity, although it would also require sustained funding and technical support.

Saudi Arabia and Turkey are expected to provide financial backing for the deal, reflecting broader regional partnerships in security cooperation.

Pakistan has already exported JF-17 aircraft to Myanmar, Nigeria, and Azerbaijan, expanding its footprint in the global defence market. Bangladesh and Iraq have also shown interest in the platform.

If the Somalia agreement proceeds, it would further position Pakistan as a competitive supplier of cost effective combat aircraft to emerging air forces.
