Mohsin Naqvi Directs CDA to Launch Electric Tram Service in Islamabad

by Mahnoor Arif

Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Naqvi has directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to prepare a detailed feasibility study for introducing an electric tram service in Islamabad.

Officials say the study must be completed within three months and submitted in time for consideration in the national budget by June 2026.

The proposed tram route will initially run from Islamabad Airport to Lake View Park. A second phase is planned to connect Rawat to Lake View Park. In the long term, the tram network is expected to link with the Murree Glass Train, creating an integrated urban and tourist transport corridor.

Authorities believe this will provide an eco‑friendly travel option for both daily commuters and visitors to Islamabad’s recreational areas.

The project also aims to modernize ticketing and operations. Plans include cashless digital ticketing systems and strategically placed charging stations to support the electric trams. CDA has begun consultations with technical experts and urban transport consultants to determine the most efficient operational and technical design, including tram capacity, frequency, and energy requirements.

Urban mobility experts note that electric trams could reduce traffic congestion, cut emissions, and offer a reliable public transport alternative in Islamabad.

Similar initiatives in other cities worldwide have shown that modern tram systems can enhance tourism while providing daily commuters with a convenient, safe, and energy‑efficient option.

Once the feasibility report is finalized, the government will review cost estimates, potential routes, and environmental impact before approving construction.

If implemented, the electric tram could become a major step toward sustainable urban transport in Pakistan’s capital, providing both residents and visitors with a greener, more connected commuting experience.
