Punjab to Buy Rs. 4 Crore Bulletproof Vehicles for Maryam Aurangzeb and Azma Bukhari

by Mahnoor Arif

The Punjab government has proposed purchasing two bulletproof vehicles worth Rs 4 crore each for ministers Maryam Aurangzeb and Azma Bukhari. This move is part of a larger plan to acquire 108 luxury vehicles for provincial ministers and senior bureaucrats during 2026.

The Transport Wing has recommended buying 28 new vehicles for the cabinet, with a combined cost of Rs 30 crore. The list includes high-end models such as Land Cruisers, Hilux 1.5, Grandy Altos, Toyota Altos, and Toyota Yaris. These vehicles are intended to enhance security and facilitate official duties for ministers and government officials.

Earlier, the government had already approved 25 high-value security vehicles specifically for VIP protection. Officials say these purchases are aimed at improving safety standards and operational efficiency for provincial leadership.

However, the proposal has sparked public debate over government spending priorities. Critics point out that this comes soon after the provincial government spent over Rs 10 billion on official aircraft. Many citizens and observers argue that such expenditures on luxury vehicles and aircraft seem excessive, especially given social and economic challenges in the province.

Security analysts maintain that while bulletproof vehicles may be necessary for high-profile officials, transparency and justification for the full fleet of luxury vehicles are essential. They suggest that the government balance security needs with public accountability.

As discussions continue, the Punjab government is expected to finalize the procurement plan after cabinet review and public feedback, ensuring that both security and cost considerations are addressed.
