Big Relief for India as Iran Allows LNG Tankers to Cross Hormuz Towards Gujarat

by Mahnoor Arif

India has received a small but important boost in its energy supply after Iran allowed some LNG and LPG tankers linked to India to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. This comes amid ongoing disruptions in the waterway due to the wider conflict in the region involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Tracking data shows two Indian‑flagged liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers, Pine Gas and Jag Vasant, safely navigating through the strait near Iran’s coast on their way toward Gujarat. These ships carry over 90,000 tonnes of LPG, which is used for cooking gas in India. Authorities expect them to arrive at Indian ports by late March.

The passage of these vessels is seen as a rare exception during a period when most tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has been heavily restricted. In recent weeks, Iran has warned many foreign ships not to enter the waterway as tensions rose, leading to disruptions in global energy shipping.

Experts say this selective access offers some relief for India’s LPG and LNG supplies at a time when energy markets are under pressure. It also highlights how diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Tehran may be influencing shipping patterns despite the ongoing crisis.

While most vessels remain stuck or rerouted because of the risk in the strait, these movements suggest a limited opening for critical fuel imports, easing shortages at home for now.
