Finland to Close Its Embassies in Myanmar, Afghanistan and Pakistan

by Mahnoor Arif

Finland will close its embassies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Myanmar during 2026. The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs announced the decision in late November 2025 as part of a major review of its diplomatic network.

The embassy in Islamabad will shut its doors this summer. Finland had reopened its mission in Pakistan in 2022 after keeping it closed for ten years. Now, it is closing again due to operational and strategic reasons. These include changes in the political situation and limited trade and economic ties with Finland.

The embassies in Kabul (Afghanistan) and Yangon (Myanmar) will also close for similar reasons. Preparations have already started, and the final decision will come through a presidential decree.

After the closures, Finland will not completely cut off services. Limited consular help, such as visa and passport services, will continue through other Finnish missions. For people in Pakistan, this will mainly be handled from the embassy in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

This move comes after Sweden closed its embassy in Pakistan indefinitely in 2023 over security concerns. Finland says it regularly checks whether its embassies around the world still meet current needs. The country wants to focus its limited resources on more important strategic partners.

The closures reflect shifting diplomatic priorities in a changing world. They may affect visa processing, trade promotion, and people-to-people contacts between Finland and the three countries.

Many observers see this as part of a broader trend where European nations are adjusting their presence in regions facing security and economic challenges.
