China to Supply Air Defence Systems to Iran: US Intelligence Claims

by Mahnoor Arif

US intelligence agencies have reported that China is planning to supply advanced air defence systems to Iran. According to the reports, Beijing may provide shoulder-fired missile systems, commonly known as MANPADs, which are effective against low-flying aircraft and drones. The shipments could be routed through third countries to hide their origin and avoid international scrutiny.

The development has raised serious concerns in Washington as it comes at a very sensitive time. US and Iranian officials are preparing for important peace talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, aimed at turning the recent two-week ceasefire into a lasting agreement.

So far, neither the US State Department nor the White House has issued an official statement on the intelligence report. The Chinese embassy in Washington has also not commented on the claims.

If confirmed, the supply of Chinese air defence systems would significantly strengthen Iran’s ability to protect its airspace. It could also complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region after weeks of conflict.

Pakistan, which is hosting the US-Iran talks, finds itself in a delicate position as the development adds new layers of complexity to the already tense geopolitical situation in the Middle East.

This move highlights the growing influence of China in the region and its willingness to support Iran despite international pressure.
