The Punjab government has taken a big step to protect artists from the misuse of artificial intelligence. It has prepared a draft law called the Punjab Performers’ Digital Identity and Artificial Intelligence Protection Act 2026. This new bill aims to stop unauthorised AI deepfakes, voice cloning, and fake videos of singers, actors, and other performers.
Under the proposed law, an artist’s voice, face, image, and other digital features will be treated as protected intellectual property. No one can use them in AI-generated content without clear, written consent from the performer. The bill also requires full disclosure when AI is used in any production. Special rules will protect minors and extend safeguards for deceased artists.
Those who break the law by creating or spreading fake AI content could face up to three years in prison and heavy fines worth millions of rupees. The government plans to set up a Digital Rights Registry to help artists register and protect their digital identity.
This move comes after growing complaints about deepfakes used for fake endorsements, political messages, or harmful videos. Artists like Shamoon Abbasi have welcomed the proposal. If passed, it will be Pakistan’s first major law of its kind to fight AI misuse in the creative industry.
Experts say this law will bring transparency, support the digital economy, and give much-needed legal protection to performers in the age of fast-changing technology. The Punjab Assembly is expected to discuss the bill soon.
