Following media reports about workers at the Khairpur Civil Hospital morgue falling ill after handling decomposing bodies, the district administration has initiated an investigation. The provincial chief secretary has requested a comprehensive report from the health department after claims emerged that morgue staff contracted infections while dealing with three decayed bodies.
Local sources disclosed that the morgue’s air-conditioning system had been out of order for several days, and essential preservation supplies were depleted. Despite notifying hospital authorities, no action was taken to resolve the situation.
Additionally, videos shared by visitors showed hospital workers receiving treatment after reportedly falling ill due to inadequate conditions for handling the bodies. It was also reported that the morgue’s embalming equipment had been nonfunctional for an extended period, and workers were avoiding the washing or shrouding of the bodies due to fears of infection from bacteria and insects.
In response, the Sukkur commissioner has called for a thorough investigation into the morgue’s conditions. A committee has been formed to examine the malfunctioning equipment and assign responsibility. The Khairpur District Health Officer has been given one week to submit a report outlining measures to prevent future incidents.
