Medicine Prices Increase Massively Following 18% Sales Tax

by admin

The recent introduction of an 18% General Sales Tax (GST) on a broad range of medicines has caused a steep rise in prices, leaving patients struggling to cope with increased costs. As a result, many are now buying only small quantities of medication, often enough for just a day or two, rather than purchasing larger stocks.

Pharmacists in Lahore have noted significant price hikes in essential items such as skin treatments, multivitamins, calcium supplements, milk powder, sugar strips, and herbal remedies following the GST. Patients, who previously bought these products in bulk, are now adjusting their buying habits due to the financial strain.

Noor Mehr, President of the Drug Lawyers Forum, has strongly condemned the government’s decision to impose GST on herbal and homeopathic medicines, as well as vitamins and food supplements. He called it an unfair move and urged the government to reconsider, arguing that medicines should be exempt from taxation under the Drug Act.

As patients continue to bear the brunt of these rising medication costs, many are appealing to the government for immediate relief.
