The Government of Punjab has officially introduced the Punjab Labour Code 2026. This new law brings together more than 25 old labour rules into one clear and modern system. It aims to protect workers better and make rules simpler for everyone.
A major highlight of the new code is the inclusion of gig workers, app-based drivers, ride-hailing staff, delivery riders, remote workers, and home-based employees under labour protection for the first time. These workers will now get legal rights, fair treatment, and workplace safeguards like other regular employees.
The law strongly bans forced labour, bonded labour, and child labour. It introduces stricter rules on minimum wages, paid leave, workplace safety, and timely salary payments. Employers must now provide clear payslips and follow transparent wage structures. The code also strengthens protections against workplace harassment and violence.
Other important changes include recognition of fixed-term employment with full benefits, improved social security, and easier ways to solve workplace disputes. Domestic workers, agricultural labourers, and construction workers are also now covered under the law.
Labour experts say this code aligns Punjab’s laws with international standards. It will help reduce exploitation and promote fair treatment. The provincial government believes the new Labour Code 2026 will create a more just working environment and support economic growth by protecting the rights of millions of workers.
